Residents of Point Fortin are uneasy after a swarm of locusts stormed their community.

First seen at Strikers Village in July, the locusts have since grown in numbers and has reached the thousands and has begun destroying crops and becoming a nuisance to residents.

Point Fortin Mayor Clyde Paul stated that the Borough Corporation has sought help from the Ministry of Agriculture.

The Ministry of Agriculture is advising residents and farmers in the Point Fortin area that the Ministry is committed to putting all the necessary resources towards eradicating the locusts currently affecting them.

The Ministry has also  issued a statement saying, “The public is reminded that the Ministry successfully treated with a similar issue during 2014 in the Chatham area, and more recently, is managing this pest in the Moruga area,” the statement said.

The statement adds that for enquiries and to report sightings of locusts, residents should contact the St Patrick West County Office in Point Fortin at 648-1426 OR 648-2384.
